You may see washing your hair as a quick 3 minute in-out job. Chuck on some shampoo, rinse, lather on the conditioner, rinse – job done right? Not quite. It turns out the secret to healthy, shiny locks is in a few simple but essential steps that we’ve been missing out on. We caught up with some of the best hairdressers in the business to discover the best hacks that’ll make every day a good hair day.
APPLY AN OIL *BEFORE* YOU SHAMPOO
Whilst most of us just go straight in with a shampoo, Paul Windle from Windle & Moodie, says that's where we've been going wrong.
The hair supremo has a genius pre-shampoo hack that'll give you the glossiest hair of your life.
Paul swears by applying a special elixir before shampooing to help repair hair and give it some serious gloss, which is exactly why he developed the Essential Oils Elixir, £30. Handy.
"This treatment serves to deeply nourish, repair and boost shine in one simple step before shampooing," Paul explained. "It is specifically designed to target dry, damaged and colour-treated hair for a glamorous and ultra-soft style."
The pre-shampoo treatment is formulated with apricot, coconut, camellia and oat oils, making it super nourishing. The 98% natural oil formula apparently provides a long-lasting sheen - we tried it and can attest it works. All you need to do is twist and massage the oil into your hair, and leave it for 15 minutes before shampooing.
Who knew achieving glossy hair could be so easy?
Now you've sorted your pre-shampoo treatments, Holly Willoughby's hairdresser, Ciler Peksah, at a Soap & Glory launch, has shared her top hair washing hacks.
SECTION THE HAIR
A lot of people just pump, pump, pump and then put shampoo and conditioner directly onto the hair but you actually need to section it into four strands, then rotate each section of the hair. This will help stimulate the scalp.
WASH THE BACK OF YOUR HEAD
WASH THE BACK OF YOUR HEAD
A lot of people don’t wash the back of their head properly. It’s very important to move the hair around. If you just let the water run down and don’t move the hair around, you’ll get build-up resulting in an irritated scalp and itchiness behind the ears.

I started using a clarifying shampoo and couldn't believe what happened to my hair
WASH THE HAIRLINE
Sometimes people say "my hair’s not gross but my hairline is really greasy". This is because when we wear makeup or apply face cream, it goes directly onto our hairline, which causes grease to build-up.
DOUBLE SHAMPOO AND USE TWO DIFFERENT SHAMPOOS
If you’re washing your hair twice a week, you can double shampoo. Just make sure to use a cleansing shampoo followed by a moisturising one because you need something more nourishing. A person who washes their hair every day should just do one shampoo and condition.

Here's what the experts think on whether you really need to wash your hair twice
LEAVE CONDITIONER IN
As long as you’ve jet washed the scalp and rinsed really well on top, don’t stress about completely rinsing the conditioner from the length. The hair on top is always going to be shiny and healthy because it’s in the roots but the length is old so leaving a bit of conditioner or mask in the length helps give nourishment throughout the day. When I’m on holiday and my hair is so dry, I even use conditioner as a styling product.
OR SWAP CONDITIONER FOR A MASK
OR SWAP CONDITIONER FOR A MASK
Cleansing shampoos strip the nourishment from your hair so I use a mask as my conditioner. It really feeds in moisture in a way that conditioner does not.
